This piece,
Icarus in Space is approximately 6'x7'x2' in space. It is composed of styrofoam blocks, spray paint, 1.5" speakers, paper mache, wood fill, and 1/4" steel rod. This piece was an extraction from an Icarus statue at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Legend has it, Icarus created wax wings and got too close to the sun, they melted, and he fell back down to earth. This piece memorializes and encapsulates Icarus in his outerspace floating phase. The color gold is used to immortalize him in the moment. It also symbolizes his stride for glory. The yearning to become a legend. The arms are outstretched and above normal arm height to make the implied figure feel as though he is floating. The two speakers emit a space-like monotonous track. The shift from woodfill covered plaster to rod indicates the melting of Icarus' body and wings as he got closer to the sun. The various sets of shadows represent different dimensions that he could have passed through or seen. Click
